The Los Angeles, California architectural and academic communities are mourning the passing of Heather Roberge, a distinguished architect, educator, and innovator whose influential work transformed conversations around design, technology, and the future of architecture.
Heather was the founder and principal of Murmur, a design practice recognized for exploring the possibilities of digital technologies, material innovation, and computational design. Through her work, she pushed the boundaries of architecture by experimenting with new approaches to structures, building systems, fabrication, and spatial experiences.
Beyond her professional achievements, Heather was a dedicated educator and longtime professor at UCLA’s Department of Architecture and Urban Design, where she mentored generations of aspiring architects. She served as chair of UCLA Architecture and Urban Design from 2017 to 2020, helping guide the department through growth while encouraging creativity, experimentation, and forward-thinking approaches to architectural education.
Throughout her career, Heather received numerous honors for her contributions to architecture and teaching, including the 2026 AIA-LA Educator of the Year, the 2017 ACADIA Teaching Award of Excellence, and the 2016 Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League of New York. Her innovative projects, including “En Pointe” and “Succulent House,” earned recognition for their originality and impact.
